*D Day (6 June 1944):
‘Operational name given to the date of the Allied continental invasion. British, American, and Canadian forces landed on the Normandy coast supported by overwhelming air and naval power. Despite heavy (mainly American) losses, a foothold was established by nightfall. Confused by deception plans, German forces did not at first know whether the operation was a bluff and were then able to counter the quick build-up of Allied logistical superiority’.
